Crisp Oatmeal Cookies

1 cup butter or margarine, or ½ of each
   (if you use all butter use about 2 tbsp. less)
2 tbsp. water
2 tbsp. maple syrup
1 cup flour

1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 cup sugar
2 1/2 cups quick cooking oatmeal (not instant)
About 1/2 cup sugar for topping

Melt shortening with water, add syrup. Sift dry ingredients, mix thoroughly with oatmeal then combine all and chill. Form into 1” balls. Flatten on parchment lined cookie sheet with the bottom of a small glass dipped in sugar. 12 to the cookie sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes at 350º. Remove from cookie sheet immediately and cool on rack. (just pull parchment paper to cooling rack)
