Square & Round Dance Convention

Publicity Release #13 for July 1st

2010 Florida State Square & Round Dance Convention

May 28, 29, & 30, 2010

What a great time we all had at the 56th Florida State Square & Round Dance Convention. Congratulations to Bud & Anita Taylor, General Chairman and all their committees for their dedicated work over the past several years. The planning by all the volunteers for this 1st All State Convention brought a fun three days to the dancers at this year’s State Convention. Hats off to everyone who helped!!

The 47” LCD HDTV was won by Dave & Juanita Lingo of Panama City and the $500 Visa card raffled by the 57th FL State Convention was won by Marie & Stephen Bigelow of Jacksonville, FL. Congratulations to all our winners!

The weekend was filled with dancing to holiday tunes regardless whether you frequented the square dance or round dance halls. Many dancers found their way to dancing for Dangles and enjoying the Line Dance and Country Western Dancing opportunities. There were over 13 squares vying for the victory of Competition Dancing! So many others visited all the halls to dance with their favorite caller and cuer. Regardless of the hall, the sounds of laughter and joy were heard throughout the Lakeland Center as everyone celebrated dance!

If you missed this year’s convention you have another opportunity to travel to Lakeland for next year’s FL State Convention May 27-29, 2011. Pirates invaded the convention on the last night proclaiming “Yo Ho Ho & A Weekend of Fun” and promised to circulate the state until gathering again for another fantastic square & round dance convention. We’ll see you next year at the Lakeland Center!

May has finally arrived and it’s just a few weeks before we all gather in Lakeland for 4 days of dancing, partying, shopping and visiting with friends! All the committee members have been working hard to plan for a fantastic weekend. Remember, the dancing will begin on Thursday, May 27th at the Trails-In Dance held at Strawberry Squares in Plant City. We’ll continue the fun at the Lakeland Center on Friday evening when the doors open at 5:00 PM.

Since our theme is “Everyday’s A Holiday When You’re Dancing”, let’s borrow a line from Santa Claus and ask if you have made your list and are you checking it twice? Here’s our list to help you along:

ü  Have you purchased your ribbons for the convention? The deadline has passed for mail in registrations but there may be some folks in your area with ribbons to sell, but you can certainly purchase your weekend ribbons at the front door at the Convention Center on Friday evening. The rate is $53.74 for a King or double Queens. Suites are available. For reservations call 863-647-3000 and ask for the Square Dancer rate. The Convention has reserved only 50 rooms, so call soon. Remember to make your reservations to include the Trails End Dance on Thursday evening, May 27th at the Strawberry Squares hall in Plant City. Check the registration form for contact information.

ü  Have you selected what outfits to bring? Everyone is encouraged to wear their holiday outfits throughout the weekend. Casual dress is an option for your daytime dancing pleasure, and square dance attire is requested for the evening events. Many folks have been busy creating the new Florida State outfit to wear during this weekend. Details of this new outfit can be found at the FL Federation website (http://www.floridasquaredance.com).

ü  As you are considering what outfits to bring along please keep in mind that each club in Florida is asked to have at least 4 people represent them in the Grand March on Saturday evening. The officers of each Association and Federation are requested to participate in the Grand March along with their banners.

ü  Have you purchased your raffle tickets for the 46-47” Class/1080p/120Hz/LCD HDTV? Tickets will be available along with the TV at the convention. It will be given away on Sunday, May 30, 2010. You don’t have to be a dancer to purchase tickets, and you don’t have to be present to win!!

ü  Did you know that you can have a preview of all the action for the weekend? The Program Booklet, distributed to dancers at the door of the Convention, is already available online. Publicity Release #11 for April 1st

2010 Florida State Square & Round Dance Convention
May 28, 29, & 30, 2010

The days are flying by so fast. Here it is April and we have only 2 months ‘till our FL State Square & Round Dance Convention in Lakeland. Everyone has been busy for months preparing for this big event. With all the help from the committees of dancers, callers and cuers, we WILL have the best state convention in history! We cannot fail as we have dancers throughout all of Florida that are giving their all, and they are being joined daily by additional dancers eager to assist in this wonderful event.

The Florida Callers Association and Round Dance Council have finalized and approved their dance programs for 2010 State Convention and they assure us of a fantastic program in every hall.  There is a lot that goes into planning a Convention and all of the time donated by all of the Callers and Cuers in preparation is appreciated by the dancers. So, if you have a fun time with a certain Caller, or Callers and Cuers, tell them!!

This year, the FCA has looked at several new ways to bring entertainment and variety to the square dance program.  Besides the regular dance programs in every hall from basic through advanced, this year we will have unique dances designed to earn special dangle badges.  There will also be competitive dancing where dancers can square up with their very best corner to see who breaks down first, with the best square being crowned “Winner!”

The FCA has also been working on ways to promote and support our new callers. Your support and participation is encouraged. A special hall has been designated for our new Green Badge members’ use.  No callers will be scheduled for this hall, but FCA Green Badge members are encouraged to round up a square of folks and use the hall to highlight their skills calling at a convention. Be sure to check it out!

Special offers will be available during the Convention weekend. You will have the opportunity to purchase your 2011 Convention ribbon at the lowest price available! There will also be a Silent Auction of Gift Baskets conducted throughout this festival weekend. The proceeds from this silent auction will benefit the 2012 FL State Convention. Plans for future conventions are already underway…so don’t miss out on these fantastic opportunities.

Have you gotten your convention ribbons yet? The April 30th deadline is quickly approaching! This is the final date for all mail-in registrations and the pre-convention price of $27 per ribbon. Don’t wait too long! Remember if you purchase your ribbon early and later learn that you aren’t able to attend the Convention, your money will be refunded if our Registrar is notified by 5 pm Friday, May 28th.  Ask your caller if he/she is “Programmed” for this year.  If they aren’t, encourage them to join in.  If he/she is programmed, they’ll have a “Hot Green” color ribbon that says “I’m Programmed” - - - so… don’t be square  ~ be there!!!

Check out our website for all the up-to-date details, contact information, and registration form, by visiting http://www.floridasquaredance.com/convention/index.html.  If you don’t use the Internet, and haven’t seen anyone with registration forms or ribbons, then contact the General Chairman, Anita & Bud Taylor at 904-272-6551, and they’ll have you connected to someone in your area to answer all your questions. Publicity Release #8 for January 1st

2010 Florida State Square & Round Dance Convention
May 28, 29, & 30, 2010

Happy New Year! Our General Chairmen and their committee members have been traveling around the state visiting the regional festivals and enjoying the hospitality of our friends in the dance community. At each and every dance, they are spreading the news of the 2010 State Convention and encouraging you to ensure that every dancer knows about this fantastic weekend of dancing. Since they can’t be everywhere every week, your help is needed to continue to spread the word. We must not forget the callers and cuers as this is YOUR convention too! Are you encouraging your dancers to attend? Your support for this annual statewide festival is critical. Help us share the excitement and enthusiasm of this opportunity to dance with folks from across the state to callers and cuers who may be familiar or new.

As we’ve informed you in past notices, there will be several notable changes to this year’s convention. Since this is the first All State Convention, we are venturing into new territory and trying some new ideas. One such change is that we won’t be hosting a fashion show in May 2010. Instead we presented a show of Holiday Fashions during the Kick-Off ceremonies at last year’s convention. If you were there, you recall seeing Santa & Mrs. Claus and the Grinch, along with their dancers in their Christmas themed outfits. The Easter Bunny was present and brought along all her friends dressed in their spring finery. Who could forget the Leprechauns and Valentine beauties? Uncle Sam showed up along with folks decked out in their patriotic outfits of red, white and blue. Lastly, the biggest Turkey in Florida was strutting along with the Great Pumpkin and dancers in their fall fashions. Everyone is encouraged to wear their holiday outfits throughout the year to any and all of their dances, as well as during the Convention weekend.

Another change to the program this year will be a special dance event held in the afternoon dance sessions. Our callers have been busy planning for several Dangle Dances. It is evident that collecting dangles is a passion of our dancers, so the callers have selected 4 or 5 of their favorites and you will be able to earn the right to add these badges to your collection. We won’t spoil the surprise of which dangles you may earn, so be sure to check your program guide and show up. Be prepared to listen carefully and laugh while you’re dancing. Whether you collect the dangles or not, you’ll have an amazing experience dancing and watching these antics. Next month we’ll continue to share a few more of the exciting offerings at the 2010 Florida State Convention. If you haven’t attended this event before, it’s not to be missed. If you are a regular attendee, this year will certainly hold a special spot in your memory.

Each month we tell you to check out our website for all the up-to-date details, contact information, and registration form, but have you done it yet? It’s easy to find, just visit http://www.floridasquaredance.com and scroll down the page to the 2010 Convention banner. If you don’t use the Internet, and haven’t seen anyone with registration forms or ribbons, then contact the General Chairman, Anita & Bud Taylor at 904-272-6551, and they’ll have you connected to someone in your area to answer all your questions. Publicity Release #6 for November 1st

2010 Florida State Square & Round Dance Convention
May 28, 29, & 30, 2010

Wow! What a treat to be in Northwest Florida for their annual Fall Round-Up. There certainly were many strange and spooky dancers wandering around all through the weekend. Once, we thought we spotted the largest turkey in history. He flew the coop too quickly for anyone to capture him for their Thanksgiving feast. Everyone in attendance had a fantastic time and the dance floor was filled with outfits of many holidays, thus showing that “Everyday’s a Holiday When You’re Dancing”!

Last month we shared some of the fund raising items being sold by the State Convention. We’ve spotted the convention shirts and tote bags across the state. We’ve heard several interesting opportunities being offered by two of our regional associations. Check out these ideas and see how you can participate in supporting the 2010 State Convention.

The West Coast Association is sponsoring a raffle for a HUGE LCD HDTV. You can have a chance to win this fantastic prize by purchasing one raffle ticket for $2 or three for $5. Contact the West Coast Ways & Means Chairman, Rita and Lance Baxter for more details on the TV and find out how to purchase your winning ticket. The drawing will be held on May 30, 2010 at the 2010 State Convention. You do not need to be present to win, but we hope you are!

The Northwest Association is quite busy with their fundraising efforts as well. They will be hosting a special dance in March 2010 to help raise money for the convention. They have also decided to donate the association’s share of the 50/50 revenue from their Fall Round-Up towards the 2010 Convention. These are terrific ideas – dance, laugh and visit with friends, have a great time, and raise money at the same time!

In the Northeast a dedicated dancer is doing her part to raise funds for the convention. As in years past, Jane Raymond is creating unique hand crafted angel pins. At a local dance recently, Jane and her husband Bob brought 95 red, white & blue Angels to sell for only $2. It has been reported that in the past years, Jane has raised hundreds of dollars through similar sales of handcrafted items. The State Convention Committee expresses their sincere thanks to Jane for all her hard work. If you are interested in purchasing one of these special angels, please contact Kathy McKinney at 904-249-3224.

Do you have some ideas for possible fund raising events? Your regional associations want to hear from you. Remember, you don’t have to have all the answers; an idea is the place to start. Share your suggestions with your club leaders, association officers, and convention committee members. Unsure who to call? Then contact Cheryl & Paul Miller at 850-939-6688 or pe.miller@mchsi.com and they will direct you to a person in your area. The State Convention takes a lot of money to put on, and we need your ideas and participation.

Don’t forget to order your ribbons before April 30th 2010. After this date, there will be no mail-in registration and you must purchase your ribbon at the box office for $30.00 per person. BUY EARLY AND SAVE MONEY! There is a money back guarantee until 5:00 PM on Friday, May 28, 2010 – no questions asked. You won’t find a better deal than that! You can contact our Convention Registrars, Carole & Garland McKenzie at 352-622-7678 or carolemc@embargmail.com., 6600 NW 61st Avenue, Ocala, FL  34482. Speaking of registrations, there was a slight error on the printed blue registration forms. Please note that the zip code for the McKenzies should read 34482. They will be happy to help you with your ribbon purchase.

The Steering Committee of the 56th Florida State Square & Round Dance Convention are shining their “traveling shoes” and packing their bags as they prepare to invade the many regional festivals in the coming weeks. The purchase of your state ribbon entitles you to 3 full days and evenings of dancing to some of the finest callers, cuers and dance leaders in the state of Florida. Advance sales help to defray the costs of presenting and planning this annual event. Forget the excuses and purchase your ribbons today! Ribbons have been distributed throughout all the regional associations. If you are unable to find anyone, then go directly to our Convention Registrars Garland & Carole McKenzie. They will be happy to assist you in completing the registration form and obtaining your turquoise ribbon – proclaiming your support of the 56th Florida State Convention!

In order to put on any event, whether at the club, regional or state level, fund raising events must take place. The Florida State Convention is no different. Each regional association is working hard to raise a portion of the funds necessary for this year’s convention. All dancers are encouraged to attend these special events. They may be a Bake Sale, a Benefit Dance, Raffle tickets for a special drawing, or the sale of Entertainment Books. Whatever your regional association has planned, your support and assistance is critical to their success! In addition to these fund-raising events, our General Chairmen, Bud & Anita Taylor, are selling convention T-shirts, buttons and tote bags. The T-shirts have been so popular that additional shipments have been ordered. The convention buttons are now available as well. Have you seen the sturdy tote bags at your weekly dances? They offer durability, style and promotion all in one! Check with your association fund-raising chairman for details on how you can purchase any of these items.

Now, you’re all set to attend, but may be wondering what activities are planned for the spectacular weekend.

Ø  Besides multiple dance halls featuring square dancing at the Mainstream, Plus, DBD and Advance levels, there will be round dance halls offering Two-Step, Waltz, Cha & Rumba – at various levels to entice dancers. You will be able to attend workshops and dance demos.

Ø  Of course, there will be the shopping opportunities discussed last month.

Ø  If your feet need a break from dancing on Saturday afternoon, you are invited to attend the Extra Mile Award ceremonies. This is an opportunity for nominated callers and cuers in Florida to be recognized for going beyond the norm in giving freely of their time and talents to the square dance activity. These dance leaders are nominated by YOU the dancer! So, contact your association leaders for details of how you can nominate your caller or cuer and show your appreciation of their devotion to our dance activity.

Ø  50/50 Drawings each evening where you have the chance to win hundreds of $$$.

Ø  A Grand March is planned for Saturday evening. The details are being held in strictest confidence at this point, but we’ll ‘spill the beans’ in the very near future.

Ø  In addition to dancing, you’ll have time for sightseeing in beautiful Lakeland and surrounding communities, fabulous restaurants for your dining pleasure, nice hotels and campgrounds very close by, and so much MORE!

How can you make the best of this Convention experience? We can sum it up in one word – VOLUNTEER! Now we’re not suggesting that you spend hours in committee work, or that you forgo dancing during the convention, but rather offer your talents, time, and skills to any of our committee chairmen. You’ve heard the adage, “Many hands make the work light.” So, add your hands and reap so many rewards. You’ll find that you will know so many more people at the convention and have the satisfaction of knowing you helped to make this event successful. Look over the listing of committees and contact the chairman of something which interests you. You will be warmly welcomed and truly appreciated.

A complete listing of committees and chairman can be viewed online at the convention website or by contacting the General Chairman, Bud & Anita Taylor at (904)272-6551 or anitanadbudinop@aol.com.  Here are a few you may be interested in:

Publicity Release #3 for August 1st

2010 Florida State Square & Round Dance Convention
May 28, 29, & 30, 2010

As we begin circulating and visiting dances across the state, we’ve been finding that many of you haven’t ever attended a State Convention.  This may be because you have just graduated and don’t know about our State Convention.  Or maybe you have recently moved into Florida and only beginning to discover all the fantastic dance opportunities available to you regardless of your level of dancing.  Or possibly you just didn’t think there was anything for you at this event.  We can hear you asking, “Why do I want to go to a State Convention?”  Whatever your reason has been for not attending a State Convention in the past, let us help you prepare for the festival which awaits you in May 2010.  For starters, it’s the only place where you’ll be able to dance to many different (and talented) callers & cuers, and dance with so many dancers in only three days!  Imagine the new friends you’ll meet and the friendships that will be formed.

There will be halls for every level of dance.  For our square dancing fans there will be Mainstream halls, Plus level halls and halls for Advance and DBD dancing.  Our round dancers will find that they haven’t been forgotten with halls for Easy Rounds (Phase 2/3) and another for higher levels (Phase 3+/4 & 5).  There will be workshops for both squares and rounds throughout the afternoon hours, along with Introduction Workshops, so you can experience a ‘taste’ of a new level of dance.

Our Vendor Chairman is working hard to bring in a wide selection of clothing and dance accessory vendors for your shopping pleasure.  There will be vendors for clothing items, shoes & boots, badges and pins, crinolines and prairie slips, hats, sewing patterns, and so much more.  In the past, our vendors traveled far and wide in order to attend our Florida State Convention and all for your shopping pleasure.  You’ll be able to “shop ‘till you drop” for all those much desired items.

Did you know that you don’t have to have a dance partner to attend the State Convention?  The dance opportunities are numerous.  On Friday night, our Singles Chairmen Shirley White and ‘Smitty’ Smith have planned a Meet & Greet in one of the dance halls, so you can gather with other Dancing Solos to chat and meet up with friends.  There will be a solo section in each hall marked as “Dancers Without Partners”.  Take advantage of these solo sections and sit with the other solos so you will get a chance to meet them and dance.  Once you arrive at the Convention, be sure to visit the Registrar and pick up your Solo ribbon.

For our younger dancers, be sure to note that the cost of a convention ribbon is only half-price for dancers under the age of 16.  For everyone older than 16, the prices have remained the same for a 3rd year at $27.00 per person.  So whether you order your ribbon at the Youth price or full price, be sure to order them before April 30th 2010. Ribbons have been distributed to dancers in each region of the state for your convenience, or you can contact our Convention Registrars, Carole & Garland McKenzie at 352-622-7678 or carolemc@embargmail.com., 6600 NW 61st Avenue, Ocala, FL  34482.  Speaking of registrations, there was a slight error on the printed blue registration forms.  Please note that the zip code for the McKenzies should read 34482. They will be happy to help you with your ribbon purchase.

When the dancing halls close for the night, and the vendors close shop for the day, you’ll need to have someplace to lay your head for a much deserved night’s rest.  Our host hotel for the Florida State Convention is Holiday Inn Lakeland – North, 3260 Highway 98 South.  The Convention reserves a limited number of rooms at the special rate of $75 + tax per night.  This is an unbelievable rate for the area!  You need to make your reservations NOW so you don’t miss out on this price.  All you need to do is call Randy or Carol Poole at 386-734-5295 and they will assist you in reserving a room for this dance-filled weekend.  If you wait too long, the rooms will fill up and you’ll be left out.  If you are a camping dancer, then you will be bringing your room along with you.  Our registration form has the contact information for several of the campgrounds in the Lakeland area.  They are all within easy driving distance to the Convention Center, but remember they fill up fast as well.  So make your reservations early!

Anita and Bud and all their committees are working hard to bring you a great fun-filled weekend.  Get registered, get your hotel room or campsite, and get ready to celebrate as Everyday’s A Holiday When You’re Dancing!

MORE NEWS COMING SOON!  Remember, Everyday’s A Holiday When You’re Dancing!

Publicity Release #2 for July 1st

2010 Florida State Square & Round Dance Convention
May 28, 29, & 30, 2010

Look at your calendar – do you have the dates May 28-30th circled? If not, you should think about making plans now!! That’s the date of YOUR State Convention. By YOUR, we mean DANCERS, CALLERS and CUERS. There are many people who have been working very hard for several years to make sure this year’s convention is a fun-filled, great dancing weekend for you. All you are asked to do is register and then show up to have a GREAT TIME!

We wish to thank all the dancers who contributed to getting the 2010 Convention off to a strong start by purchasing their Early Bird ribbons and the convention shirt. If you didn’t take advantage of this opportunity, it’s not too late! Additional convention shirts have been ordered and will be available soon. Ribbons have been distributed to dancers in each region of the state for your convenience, or you can contact our Convention Registrars, Carole & Garland McKenzie at 352-622-7678 or carolemc@embargmail.com. Please note that the zip code for the McKenzies should read 34482.

The 2010 Convention is the 1st All-State Florida Square & Round Dance Convention. This is the first time that the convention is not hosted by one regional association. Instead, the planning committee is made up of dancers from across the state and YOU are invited to volunteer your skills and talents. Visit the convention web site and contact any of the committee chairs for information on how you can be a part of the 2010 Convention.

The theme for this year’s festival is “Everyday’s A Holiday When You’re Dancing” and the ‘official’ convention outfit is so easy! Any holiday outfit or combination of holiday colors in your closet is exactly what you should wear to promote the convention. You aren’t limited to wearing that special outfit during the holiday either. Wear it to any dance at any time of the year. What a great way to get more wear out of those special outfits AND promote our own Florida Square & Round Dance Convention at the same time!

Check out our website for all the up-to-date details, contact information and registration form, but visiting http://www.floridasquaredance.com/convention/index.html.
