December 1999

DECEMBER 1999  CANAVERAL SQUARES— Rockledge. On behalf of our club, Skip Cleland, our caller, paid a richly deserved tribute to the memory of a zealous square dancer, Russ Isenbletter, who passed away on October 30th. Russ is remembered as a kind person, fully dedicated to his family, friends, square dancing, and bowling. He always had that "sparkle" in his eyes, especially when he brought his charming partner, Joan Cleland onto the dance floor to engage his dancing friends into his love of the dance.

Being an angel to his daughter, Sarah Rollins, along with her partner, Eugene Benoit, gave him overwhelming pride a few years ago. The four of them were seen at many a dance to the delight of everyone. Squaring up with Russ will be sorely missed by all of us. A Military Honor Guard honored our friend, Russ, who had served in both the Navy and Air Force. The Canaveral Squares extends our deepest sympathy to his four sons, daughter and their families, his dear friend and square dance partner, Joan Cleland, Skip and Jennifer Cleland, and friends. Our "minds eye" will place Russ in our square each week and always in our prayers.

Jean and Cecil Faulk, our Presidents, took the opportunity at each Raid and Retrieval, to promote our upcoming Charity Dance, Dec. 10th, with our proceeds of donations going to the Brevard Hospice, in honor of Russ Isenbletter.

What a view we had of the Indian River Lagoon, as we drove to Barefoot Bay for our evening dance with the Twirlers, in early October. Dancing to their caller, Dale McClary and cuer Jim Runnels, plus enjoying a little social time with all of them made for a fun evening we’ll have to repeat again for their Charity Dance too. We traveled a bit again to dance to Jim Louder’s calls and Roy Brown’s cues when a retrieval trip to Apopka, Oct. 9th, gave us time with our “Pirates” friends. Thanks for a fun night out, Pirates!

Our teams: Presidents, Jean and Cecil Faulk, Caller, Skip and Jennifer Cleland, and Cuer, Vince and Camille Furtado, along with the rest of the Board and Club members, wish you all a Very Happy Holiday Season and New Year!

As always, this time of year, we are enjoying our snowbird friends stopping by for a chat and dance. You folks are always welcome to come in and workshop along with the new dancers.  Come and get to know these Mainstream/Plus students.

Our regular dance hours are 8:00 pm- 10:00 p.m.

Sorry no early rounds since our class are working in their squares.

Starting January 11, 2000, from 7pm-9pm, Skip Cleland will be holding a Tuesday evening workshop entitled, "Wanna Advance!"

We would love to have you all explore the world of dancing on Tuesday and Friday evenings with us! REMEMBER NO DANCE evenings: Nov. 26th, Dec. 24th, and Dec. 31st.

November 1999

CANAVERAL SQUARES- Rockledge.  We kicked off this fall with a few demonstration dances that lighten our hearts.  October 11th, McLarty Recreation Center had an Open House for the public to see what Rockledge clubs have to offer their family.  Naturally the Canaveral Squares enjoyed educating the public about square dancing fun.  Skip Cleland presented us with some fine tunes to dance to while the public enjoyed music that gladdens the heart.  We enjoyed some time dining together after kicking up our heels.  We assisted in a fundraiser at Imperial Towers, in Titusville, for one of their senior citizens.  We brightened up their day, which delighted us all.

What a great time we had with The Barn's Promenader's, September 3rd, when they showed up for a raid.  It was nice to enjoy a summer evening of dancing and snacking with them.  We are anxious to visit The Barn's
brightly decorated hall for some of their fall dances coming up.  We all joined in, Oct. 1st, to welcome our cuer, Vince Furtado, back after a summer without him.  Thanks, Allemanders, for adding to the welcoming
party we had for him and his wife, Camille, as they start the fall season with us.  The second thing on the Allemanders agenda was a raid, October 1st, and we all had fun dancing to Skip Cleland's calls and Vince's cues. We traveled a bit to dance to J. Louder's calls and Roy Brown's cues when a retrieval trip to Apopka, Oct. 9th, gave us time with our "Pirates" friends.  Thanks for a fun night out, Pirates!

Even though Hurricane Irene's rain was outside our door, we enjoyed some dance time, Oct. 15th, with our Guest Caller SusanElaine Packer.  She always has such a sparkle in her calls!  We took delight dancing to her
calls and Vince Furtado's round dance cues.

Jean and Cecil Faulk, our presidents, are continuing to ask for your prayers and continued support for those in our club who are going through some trying times right now.  A card and call would help those who can't
come for their Yellow Rock and dance.  On behalf of our club, our presidents, Jean and Cecil Faulk, would like to extend our wishes for a Healthy and Happy Thanksgiving!

Bales of hay and decorations will set the stage for our Halloween Dance, as some of our dancers come in costumes or colorful square dance apparel to enjoy Skip Cleland and Vince Furtado's performance Oct. 29th.  Our Nov. 12th Thanksgiving Dinner/Dance tickets are going!

Our Classes: Our caller, Skip Cleland, began our Basic dance class Sept. 17th.  Details about Friday evenings 7 p.m. fun is always available by calling Jane or Jim Hart, 407-632-4295.  Thanks, Canaveral Square Angels, for making an effort to support our BASIC class.  Our class will be into Mainstream by the time our Charity Dance gets underway December 10th. They will be able to enjoy the first half-hour with the club while experiencing the holiday spirit.

LOOKING AHEAD--SPECIAL DANCES: Thanksgiving Dinner/Dance--Nov. 12th.
Charity Dance, Dec. 10th.  NO DANCE evenings will be Nov. 26th, Dec.  24th & 31st.
Our club looks forward to a dance with you each Friday.

October 1999

Rockledge. We kicked off this fall with a few demonstration dances that lighten our hearts. October 11th McLarty Recreation Center had an Open House for the public to see what Rockledge clubs have to offer their family. Naturally the Canaveral Squares enjoyed educating the public about
what square dancing fun and Skip singing was all about. Skip Cleland presented us with some fine tunes to dance to while the public enjoyed music that gladdens the heart. We enjoyed some time dining together after kicking up our heels. Imperial Towers in Titusville had requested our
assistance with a fundraiser for one of their senior citizens. We brightened up their day and had a fun time seeing smiles around their hall.

What a great time we had with The Barn's Promenader's, September 3rd when they showed up for a raid and wanting tickets to our Nov. 12th dinner/dance. It was nice to enjoy a summer evening of dancing and snacking with them. We are anxious to visit their brightly decorated hall for some
of their fall dances coming up.

The Allemanders stopped by for a raid on October 1st. We all joined in to welcome our cuer, Vince Furtado, back after a summer without him. It was great to gather with his wife, Camille, and our friends, the Allemanders, for a lovely evening of dancing. Our Thanksgiving tickets were going as the Allemanders remembered last year's great dinner/dance activities. Thanks for adding to the welcoming crowd for Vince and Camille first fall dance for us, Allemanders.

Asa Clark and Rosalie Turner, our Banner Chairpersons, reported that everyone is looking forward to our retrieval trip to Apopka. This gives us another opportunity to socialize with both old and new friends while enjoying an evening out of town. Our upcoming dance Oct. 15th, when
Susan Elaine Packer will be our Guest Caller and again Vince Furtado will cue the round dances is a good excuse for The Pirates to enjoy time closer to their natural elements, Atlantic Ocean, after dancing with us that night, right?

Jean and Cecil Faulk, our presidents, are continuing to ask for your prayers and continued support for those in our club who are going through some trying times right now. A card would help those who can't come for their Yellow Rock and dance. We dearly miss them.

Bales of hay and decorations will set the stage for our Halloween Dance, as some of our dancers come in costumes and colorful square dance apparel to enjoy Skip Cleland and Vince Furtado's performance. NO DANCE evenings will be Nov. 26th, Dec. 24th & 31st.

Our Classes: Our caller, Skip Cleland, began our Basic dance class Sept. 17th. Details about Friday evenings 7 p.m. fun is always available by calling Jane or Jim Hart, 407-632-4295. They will be able to enjoy the first half-hour with the club while experiencing the holiday spirit.

Jean and Cecil always enjoy the generous spirit of the club members each week when you folks contribute such delicious snacks and help in the kitchen. Our club looks forward to a dance with you each Friday.

July 1999

Rockledge...Hello everyone! A great big thank you to all those who worked so hard to make Mardi Gras Time in '99 happen. Jim and Jan McConnaha and their committee did an exceptional job. Otis and Linda Lutz and their committee did such a wonderful job of fostering that Sew and Save philosophy and hands on attitude with demonstrations. The Style Show was outstanding as were the After Parties and Skits. The Callers and Cuers were exceptional with all their activities of Square, Round, Contra, Country/Western,

Line, Solo Youth and Handicapable Dancers Dancing sections. The Northeast Florida Square & Round Dance Association committee presented us with an inspiring 2000 celebration. See you at the 46th.

The men danced free and enjoyed our pie night celebration at our Father's Day Dance on June 18. No dance was scheduled on June 25 while dancers enjoyed the State and National Conventions. Our 4th of July dance and social allowed everyone to catch up on Convention activities they enjoyed in May and June. Vince Furtado will be our guest cuer June 18 and early July. We look forward to his return in September. We're going to miss him while he's gone UNLESS we get out and visit other clubs in Brevard he calls for each week. Club trips are already being scheduled to dance to him in Melbourne and Satellite Beach. Our Open House September 10 and 17 is set up to greet newcomers into our class. Come get a Yellow Rock and enjoy our snack table and dancing.

June 1999

Rockledge...Hello everyone! On April 9 we were honored by the presence of the Florida Federation of Square Dancers Presidents, Jack and Zonie Taylor, who came to present "The Circle of Service A ward" to Cecil and Jean Faulk, our Presidents, at our Anniversary Dance. Cecil and Jean were honored with this meritorious award, given to square and/or round dancers, who give significant time and energy to our community and state activities to promote the square and round dancing movement. Some of their peers in attendance were Linda and Otis Lutz, Rosalie Turner and Asa Clark. Cecil and Jean's generous contributions, over the years, are well known and greatly appreciated by all those who have worked with them and enjoyed the events they made happen. Our admiration and congratulations to both of you!

Spring flowers on cakes helped us celebrate in May. First, we had our Mother's Day and Cake Night Dance, May 7 when our caller, Skip Cleland, and our cuer, Vince Furtado, honored the Mothers, who danced free. It was a special evening of wonderful music among friends. Later in the month, we thanked Asa Clark, our class coordinator, for putting together a delightful Graduation Dance for Jerry Anderson, Geoff Edmands, and Peggy Karpinski. We are proud and de- lighted with their skills and the way they are already exploring other clubs in our area. Skip Cleland must take a well-deserved bow for the extraordinary amount of time and energy he so willingly gave our class since September. Also, congratulations go out to our An- gels for the patience, and encouragement they gave these three new dancers. Our students sincerely appreciate our guest callers of March and April, John Swindle and John Saunders, for helping them learn new plus movements in Skip's absence.

Our new graduates, Geoff Edmands, and Peggy Karpinski were among our retrievers who visited the Allemanders,

with two squares, in late April after their caller, John Saunders, had helped teach our students earlier that month. Jerry Reed, the Yellow Rockers caller, crooned some beloved melodies, April 24 as did Vince Furtado the cuer at both clubs we visited this month. Thanks for the memorable evenings, Allemanders, and Yellow Rockers.

It wasn't flowers but beads that were collected by many of our members at the 45th Florida State Convention in Lakeland, Florida the end of May. Next month's newsletter will have a piece on this special dance activity for Florida. The men dance free and can enjoy our pie night celebration at our Father's Day Dance in June. No dance is scheduled for the last weekend of June when dancers enjoy the National Convention. A Hot Dog affair to celebrate the 4th of July will allow everyone to talk over the Conventions they enjoyed in May and June. We would love to have you join us.

April 1999

Rockledge...Hello everyone! March began another spring season filled with dancing activities. The Presidents' Council of Brevard County will have had The Second Annual All Brevard Square Dance Clubs Family Picnic, at the Wickham Park Pavilion, on Sunday, March 21 by the time this goes to press. See you at McLarty Stadium for the American Cancer Society fund raising event in Rockledge, March 20, when our club will be dancing, in the morning, to aid this fund raising event along with promoting square dancing.

We had another memorable evening on a retrieval at The Barn, February 4, dancing to the Promenader's caller Dale McClary with their guest caller Otis Lutz and cuer, Wayne Guice. It's always a treat to dance with this lovely club. We hope they will visit us for our April dance when Guest Caller, John Saunders will add another evening of dancing enjoyment for all of us.

Glimmering hall of red and white with our cuer, Vince Furtado and our guest caller Darryl Figg's nice selection of songs left no doubt we were participants in a special valentine dance at our Sweetheart Ball, February 12. Retrieving their banner, the Silver Squares filled in the floor with their colors of blue and white as in a prelude to a July 4 dance. Such a social evening we had naturally with lots of snacks.

Some of our club enjoyed the Kiss-A-Me I Squares 30th Rodeo Dance, February 27. It's always a treat to visit them for this occasion. We hope to enjoy everyone's company again when we have our 39th Anniversary Dance in April.

Jean and Cecil Faulk, our presidents, are continuing to ask for your prayers and continued support for those in our club who are going through trying times with their health and family situations.

Come ..Angel our Plus Square Dance. Class from 7:00-8:00 p.m., every Friday night. Our class coordinator, Asa Clark, will be coordinating their Graduation Dance, May r 21. Our evenings of dancing to our cuer, delightful harmony intertwined in the melodies sung by Skip and Jennifer are delightful musical experiences we carry away with us Friday evenings. Come and join us.

February 1999

Rockledge...We are so very proud of our two club members, Rosalie Turner and Asa Clark, who received "The Circle of Service Award" by their peers at our December 18 dance. They were honored with the merited award for the many years of significant contributions they have both made to the square and round dancing movement. Asa said, "They feel it was a tremendous honor for them" to have received this prestigious award.

The Space Trackers brought nearly three squares for a raid on this evening of celebration for our surprised friends, Rosalie and Asa. Congratulations to you both for such devotion to square and round dancing, by working in our community and state activities to promote this movement.

As past Presidents of the Florida Callers Association, our caller and his wife, Skip and Jennifer Cleland, are already working one of their 1999's resolutions -remodeling their kitchen and patio. Naturally, Skip took the opportunity to initiate their new patio concrete slab by having the club member's square up and dance at their New Years day party for us. Also, it isn't every day that one sees Skip in his special blue planetarium T -shirt calling tips! Thanks, Skip and Jennifer for bringing the club together at your home for a New Year Day party.

February is our Sweetheart Ball. Nomination pledges have been piling up since early in January to determine our Dance Queen. She and her chosen King will reign over a beautifully decorated hall and dance. Of course, our cuer, Vince Furtado, will have those enchanting songs to entice you onto the floor for round dancing. Remember, also that we have Darrell Figg, as our Guest Caller for this festive occasion. Darrell's picking out some special songs for this occasion that will surely add to your Valentine surprises this year! So come join us in this celebration of the heart! …..may be obtained from our new class coordinator,Asa Clark.

Jean and Cecil Faulk, our presidents, are asking for your prayers and continued support for those in our club who are going through some trying times with health and family situations now. Cheer 'em up with a Yellow Rock, too!

AS we are all still partaking of our New Years resolutions, right? Don't forget the one about supporting our square and round dancing movement by adding more dancing evenings to your winter fun resolutions. As always at this time of year, we are enjoying our snowbird friends stopping by for a friendly chat and dance. As you already know, Snowbirds are always welcome to help us Angel the friends you will be dancing with next year come and get to know them early! Our new dancers will be given a memorable time when more helping hands are there to support their learning experience.

Our teams: Presidents, Jean and Cecil Faulk; Caller, Skip and Jennifer Cleland; and Cuer, Vince and Camille Furtado, along with the rest of the board and club members, wish you all a Very Happy New Year!

Looking Ahead, Special Dances: Our Valentine Dance, ……………Guest Caller, Darrell Figg, from Altamonte Springs, Florida. Our Board will be announcing other specials for the year in time.
